In collaboration with FUSE, we created a new Fluorescence activity and taught the activity at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA). Students learn about the science of why things glow under UV lights and get to make a mini fluorescent lava lamp.

We tested a newly updated LaserComm activity at the local science museum (MOXI). The new activity is easier to use and more engaging! It uses a Laser/LED, numerous light-guiding components, and some electronics to send music with light!

Shereen Hamdy, the Outreach Committee Chair, presented the PhoSoc Outreach activities at ETOP 2019 in Quebec City on May 24th!  Congrats Shereen!

Takako Hirokawa and Victoria Rosborough gave a talk at OFC!
Congratulations on being accepted for the talk!

The talk is titled “Value of Volunteering: Student Perspective”.
They spoke along with other women from IEEE Photonics Society and the Women Engineering Program at the Suzanne R. Nagel Lounge on Tuesday March 5th.

Check out the speaker schedule on the OFC conference website!

A paper about our outreach events was accepted for an oral presentation at ETOP!
Congratulations to everyone who helped make our outreach a success!

"15th Conference on Education and Training in Optics and Photonics, ETOP 2019" have accepted your paper,

UCSB's Photonics Society awarded Chapter of the Year for 2016!

7/14/2016

The UCSB Student Chapter was given the 2016 Chapter of the Year award by the IEEE Photonics Society!
The Photonics Society at UCSB is the first student chapter to ever receive this award, which includes professional (non-student) chapters from around the world.  We are honored to receive the award and hope that the recognition will help us to expand our activities, and better serve the local photonics community.

Summer BBQ: Socialize with Local Photonics Crews

7/5/2013

Picture
This summer, local photonics companies Aurrion & Freedom Photonics sponsored a beach BBQ with the Photonics Society!   Both of these companies were founded by UCSB alumni, and are on the forefront of cutting edge photonics research.

Four local companies were represented, along with UCSB research groups from the physics, electrical engineering and materials departments.

Free food & drink & a beach barbecue were enjoyed by the families and children of these local photonics researchers, with more than 50 people attending in total.

First Social Gathering

10/11/2012

Our first outreach event was highly successful!  Of course, a Goleta beach barbecue rarely fails.
About 20 people attended, the president grilled, the vice lectured and Professor Bowers came by to say hi and enjoy the festivities.

Welcome to the Newly Founded Student Chapter at UCSB!

10/1/2012

Hello fellow Photonics scientists!

I have been charged with launching a UCSB student chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society, and would like you all to join!

At it's inception, the primary perk would be that we can invite your favorite or most esteemed lecturers to give talks at UCSB. With Prof. Bowers as the faculty advisor and the beautiful Santa Barbara weather, I'm sure that we can convince some interesting people to come and tell us about their research!

Become a Founding Member by pledging your support, strengthening the bond between photonics researchers at UCSB!  Membership to the IEEE Photonics Society, if you aren't already a member, is a measly $15 per year.  We need at least 6 members to qualify for IEEE support. With membership, you'll also receive a hard copy of the IEEE Photonics Society Newsletter 6 times a year. Check out http://photonicssociety.org/content/member-benefits for details. Please email me if you'd like to join, and I'll come to you with the official form to sign.

A somewhat broader benefit would be that PhoSoc members would be introduced to some of the extremely varied research done even within these three groups, either through lectures from members or through social gatherings funded by the broader IEEE PS. We eventually hope to include the broader photonics research groups on the UCSB campus, which includes chemical engineers (polymer solar cells/LEDs), visual-wavelength work (GaN photonics) and physicists (numerous applications).

If any of you are interested in further involvement with this nascent society (and with getting some extra credentials on your C.V.), we could definitely use an hour/two per week of website, organizational or other help.

Best Regards,

Jared Bauters
