On October 21st, researchers at UCSB's Photonics Society celebrated the international Day of Photonics!
Faculty advisor Dr. John Bowers (top-left), his research group and the UCSB Photonics Society members at the university sport their Photonics Society T-Shirts to commemorate the day.
This summer, local photonics companies Aurrion & Freedom Photonics sponsored a beach BBQ with the Photonics Society! Both of these companies were founded by UCSB alumni, and are on the forefront of cutting edge photonics research.
Four local companies were represented, along with UCSB research groups from the physics, electrical engineering and materials departments.
Free food & drink & a beach barbecue were enjoyed by the families and children of these local photonics researchers, with more than 50 people attending in total.
Our first outreach event was highly successful! Of course, a Goleta beach barbecue rarely fails.
About 20 people attended, the president grilled, the vice lectured and Professor Bowers came by to say hi and enjoy the festivities.
We are the UCSB Photonics Society, a joint chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) and the Optical Society of America (OSA). We host periodic guest seminars in recent photonics research, hold photonics-themed banquets and workshops, and organize outreach to the surrounding community in photonics education.
The IEEE Photonics society awarded us the Chapter of the Year in 2016, as well as Most Innovative Chapter in 2017.
