Professor John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency & of the Center for Energy Efficient Materials, Fred Kavli Chair of Nanotechnology and head of the Optoelectronics Research Group, began the UCSB Student Chapter of the Photonics Society in 2012 with Jared Bauters, and remains the faculty advisor for the group.
Society Advisor: Dr. Demis John![]()
Demis was a founding officer of the UCSB IPS in 2012. He received a doctorate from the research group of Dr. Dan Blumenthal in 2012, having studied low-loss glass waveguides, then worked at Praevium Research, Inc making new light sources for medical imaging and spectroscopy until 2017. He currently works at the UCSB NanoFab. He is an advisor for the Photonics Society continuing some of the institutional knowledge, in addition to industry liason by keeping us in contact with local photonics companies. Apart from photonics, his interests include sailing, cycling, science outreach/teaching, and radio DJ'ing at KCSB 91.9FM.
