President: Stephen Misak
Stephen Misak received a B.S. in Engineering Physics and with a minor in Optical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2017. He received a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2019, and he is currently pursuing a PhD as a member of Prof. Clint Schow's Group. His research covers component design, fabrication, and testing for photonic integrated circuits on InP and Silicon Photonics platforms. As part of his research, Stephen worked at Intel Silicon Photonics during 2019. Currently, his research is focused on the fabrication and testing of O-band lasers and coherent receivers on InP.
Vice President: Evan Chansky
Evan Chansky graduated from Lehigh University in 2020 with a BS Electrical Engineering and BS Engineering Physics and is now pursuing his PhD in Electrical Engineering at UCSB. He is researching optical interconnects for extreme environments including cryogenic temperatures and high radiation levels. His hobbies include surfing, hiking, biking, skateboarding, photography, listening to music, and drinking lots of coffee.
Treasurer: Viviana Arrunategui-Norvick
Viviana Arrunategui graduated from Brown University in 2020 with a BS in electrical engineering. She is currently pursuing a PhD in electrical engineering with an emphasis on electronics and photonics. She is currently working on silicon photonic ring resonator switches.
Secretary: KaiKai Liu
Kaikai is a PhD student in Daniel Blumenthal's group. He received his B.S. degree in Physics at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2018. His research focus is ultra-narrow linewidth stimulated Brillouin laser. Besides work, he loves basketball and surfing.
Faculty Advisor: Prof. John Bowers
Professor John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency & of the Center for Energy Efficient Materials, Fred Kavli Chair of Nanotechnology and head of the Optoelectronics Research Group, began the UCSB Student Chapter of the Photonics Society in 2012 with Jared Bauters, and remains the faculty advisor for the group.
Society Advisor: Dr. Demis John
Demis was a founding officer of the UCSB IPS in 2012. He received a doctorate from the research group of Dr. Dan Blumenthal in 2012, having studied low-loss glass waveguides, then worked at Praevium Research, Inc making new light sources for medical imaging and spectroscopy until 2017. He currently works at the UCSB NanoFab. He is an advisor for the Photonics Society continuing some of the institutional knowledge, in addition to industry liason by keeping us in contact with local photonics companies. Apart from photonics, his interests include sailing, cycling, science outreach/teaching, and radio DJ'ing at KCSB 91.9FM.
