Faculty Advisor: Prof. John Bowers
Professor John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency & of the Center for Energy Efficient Materials, Fred Kavli Chair of Nanotechnology and head of the Optoelectronics Research Group, began the UCSB Student Chapter of the Photonics Society in 2012 with Jared Bauters, and remains the faculty advisor for the group.
Society Adviser: Demis John
Demis was a founding officer of the UCSB IPS in 2012. He received a doctorate from the research group of Dr. Dan Blumenthal in 2012, having studied low-loss glass waveguides, and currently works at Praevium Research, Inc making new light sources for medical imaging and spectroscopy.
He is currently the industry liason for the IPS, keeping us in contact with local photonics companies, while also handling graphic design and the organization for various events, including the Photonics Society Annual Banquet.
Apart from photonics, his interests include sailing, cycling, science outreach/teaching, and radio DJ'ing at KCSB 91.9FM.
President: Takako Hirokawa
Takako is a graduate student in Prof. Clint Schow's group. She received a B.S. in both Applied Math and Engineering Physics from the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research interest are in silicon photonics.
Vice President: Philip Chan
Philip is a graduate student in the Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC) under Prof. Shuji Nakamura. His research is in blue InGaN lasers for lighting. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University in 2015.
Treasurer: Andrew Netherton
Andrew is currently a graduate student in the Optoelectronics Research Group. He received his B. S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2016.
Secretary: Victoria Rosborough
Victoria works on optical transmitter design for free space communications as a graduate student in Professor Klamkin's group. She received an M.S. in applied physics from the University of Oregon in 2013 and a B.S. in physics from Mary Baldwin University in 2012.
Academic Affairs Chair: Justin Norman
Justin received B.S. degrees in Physics and Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 2013. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Materials at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is co-advised by Professor Arthur Gossard and John Bowers. His research interests include molecular beam epitaxial growth of InAs quantum dot lasers on silicon, direct III-V growth on Si, and high Q quantum dot microcavities for cavity quantum electrodynamics.
Industry Connections Chair: Brandon Isaac
Brandon is graduate student working under Prof. Jonathan Klamkin and Larry Coldren on active III/V devices in photonic integrated circuits for phased array systems. He received his BS in chemical engineering and physics at the University of Kentucky.
Education Outreach Chair: Kareem Hamdy
Kareem is a graduate student in the research group of Prof. Shuji Nakamura. His research focus is on tunnel junction contacts for high-power high-efficiency InGaN lasers for lighting. He received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University.
Media Chair: Jonathan Madajian
Jonathan is an undergraduate researcher in the Lubin and Klamkin groups working on applications for lasers in deep space.
Social Events Chair: Koosha Daneshi
Koosha Daneshi is a Master's student working with Professor DenBaars. Prior to becoming a Master's student, he received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas.
Lecture Host: Robert Zhang
Robert is a PhD student in John Bowers group. He currently serves in the lecture host committee. Robert Zhang received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University in 2015. His current project is developing process design kit (PDK) in various software platform based on devices designed and fabricated at University of California Santa Barbara.
Webmaster: Stephen Misak
Stephen Misak received a B.S. in Engineering Physics and with a minor in Optical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2017, and is currently working towards an M.S./PhD. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara. His research focuses on coherent receiver photonic integrated circuits on InP.
Daniel is PhD Candidate in the research group of Prof. Shuji Nakamura His research interests are in high power blue and green InGaN lasers for lighting and displays. Daniel joined the UCSB IPS as its first Social Chair in 2015. He received his BS from Carnegie Mellon University with a double major in Materials Science and Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy.
Burhan is a Ph.D student at the Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC). He is advised by Prof. James Speck, and Prof. Steve DenBaars. He joined IPS as its first Media Chair in July 2015. He is working on high extraction efficiency Deep UV LEDs for disinfection and diagnostics. He received his B.S. in Physics and Electrics engineering from KFUPM and M.Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT.
