Faculty Advisor: Prof. John Bowers
Professor John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency & of the Center for Energy Efficient Materials, Fred Kavli Chair of Nanotechnology and head of the Optoelectronics Research Group, began the UCSB Student Chapter of the Photonics Society in 2012 with Jared Bauters, and remains the faculty advisor for the group.
President: Eric Stanton
Eric is a current graduate student in the Optoelectronics Research Group and is working on passive devices for multi-octave spectral combining. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly in 2012 prior to joining UCSB's ECE department.
Vice President: Taran Hufman
Taran is a graduate student researcher in the Optical Communications & Photonic Networks research group. He received his B.S. in Physics at USC.
Secretary: Victoria Rosborough
Victoria works on optical transmitter design for free space communications as a graduate student in Professor Klamkin's group. She received an M.S. in applied physics from the University of Oregon in 2013 and a B.S. in physics from Mary Baldwin University in 2012.
Treasurer: Andrew Netherton
Andrew is currently a graduate student in the Optoelectronics Research Group. He received his B. S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2016.
Publicist: Minh Tran
Minh Tran received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokyo in March 2013. He is currently working towards his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests are in Silicon Photonics.
External Affairs: Tanya Das
Tanya Das is a PhD Candidate in the Schuller group and is researching new ways of manipulating light at the nanoscale for metamaterial applications. She received her B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Social Chair: Daniel Beccera
Daniel is PhD Candidate in the research group of Prof. Shuji Nakamura His research interests are in high power blue and green InGaN lasers for lighting and displays. Daniel joined the UCSB IPS as its first Social Chair in 2015. He received his BS from Carnegie Mellon University with a double major in Materials Science and Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy.
Outreach Chair: Takako Hirokawa
Takako is a graduate student in Prof. Clint Schow's group. She received a B.S. in both Applied Math and Engineering Physics from the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research interest are in silicon photonics.
Media Chair: Burhan Saifaddin
Burhan is a Ph.D student at the Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC). He is advised by Prof. James Speck, and Prof. Steve DenBaars. He joined IPS as its first Media Chair in July 2015. He is working on high extraction efficiency Deep UV LEDs for disinfection and diagnostics. He received his B.S. in Physics and Electrics engineering from KFUPM and M.Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT.
Industry Liason: Demis John
Demis was a founding officer of the UCSB IPS in 2012. He received a doctorate from the research group of Dr. Dan Blumenthal in 2012, having studied low-loss glass waveguides, and currently works at Praevium Research, Inc making new light sources for medical imaging and spectroscopy.
He is currently the industry liason for the IPS, keeping us in contact with local photonics companies, while also handling graphic design and the organization for various events, including the Photonics Society Annual Banquet.
Apart from photonics, his interests include sailing, cycling, science outreach/teaching, and radio DJ'ing at KCSB 91.9FM.
Webmaster: Warren Jin
Warren Jin received a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Brown University in 2012, and is currently working towards an M.S./PhD. In Electrical Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara. His research focuses on tunable ring resonators in photonic integrated circuits.
Member: Robert Zhang
Robert is a PhD student in John Bowers group. He currently serves in the lecture host committee. Robert Zhang received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University in 2015. His current project is developing process design kit (PDK) in various software platform based on devices designed and fabricated at University of California Santa Barbara.
Member: Daehwan Jung
Daehwan received my BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UT Dallas in 2010 and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Yale in 2016. His research area is to study quantum dot laser diode on silicon by molecular beam epitaxy.
Member: Philip Chan
Philip is a graduate student in the Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC) under Prof. Shuji Nakamura. His research is in green InGaN lasers for lighting. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University in 2015.
Member: Kareem Hamdy
Kareem is a graduate student in the research group of Prof. Shuji Nakamura. His research focus is on tunnel junction contacts for high-power high-efficiency InGaN lasers for lighting. He received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University.
Member: Akhilesh Khope
Akhilesh is a graduate student in the Optoelectronics group at UCSB, and also the treasurer of IPS. His research interests are in Photonic Network on a Chip and Silicon photonics.
Member: Changmin Lee
Changmin is a current Ph.D student in Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC), advised by Dr. Steve DenBaars, and became in charge of IPS secretary in July 2015. His research focus is on growth, fabrication, and measurement of high-speed GaN laser diode for visible light communication (Li-Fi). He received his B.S. in Electrics engineering at UT Dallas and Kyungpook National University in Korea both.
Associate: Sudha Srinivasan
Sudha was a graduate student in the research group of Dr. John Bowers, and assumed the position of IPS president in October 2013. His research interests are in Silicon photonics and low noise mode-locked lasers. He currently works at Aurrion Inc, LLC.
Sudha was previously VP and treasurer of the Indian Music association 'Raagmala'. In his free time he enjoys painting and playing volleyball and basketball.
Associate: Renan Moreira
Renan, a founding officer of the IPS, received his PhD from the Blumenthal Research group, OCPN, studying low loss waveguides for systems applications. He currently works at Freedom Photonics LLC in Goleta.
Associate: Jared Bauters
Jared was the first president and founder of the UCSB Photonics Society, in October 2012. Having graduated from the Bowers research group in 2013, he currently works in the field of Silicon Photonics at Aurrion Inc, LLC in Goleta.
Associate: Jock Bovington
Jock was a founding officer of the UCSB IPS and the first Vice President. He received his PhD Degree in 2014 from Prof. John Bowers' group, and is now with Oracle.
