President: Caroline Reilly
Caroline works in the Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC) as a graduate student in the group of Prof. Steven DenBaars. Her research is on the growth of InN quantum dots by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). She received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Vice President: Nathan Palmquist
Nate is a graduate student in the Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC) under Prof. Shuji Nakamura. He is researching visible wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with applications in solid-state lighting, plant growth, virtual reality, and high-speed data transmission (LiFi). He received his B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2016.
Treasurer: Michael Nickerson
Michael is a Ph.D. student in Prof. Jonathan Klamkin's group, working on integrated photonics for optical phased arrays and free-space optical communication. Prior to joining the group, he worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Massachusetts. He received his bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Washington, after which he spent several years at JILA in Boulder, Colorado.
Secretary: Michael Choquer
Michael works in the Optical Communications and Photonic Integration Group under Prof. Daniel Blumenthal. His research utilizes ultra-low-loss silicon nitride-based waveguides for applications in quantum computing, low-form-factor sensing and spectroscopy, and high-speed optical communications. He earned a Bachelors of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle.
Faculty Advisor: Prof. John Bowers
Professor John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency & of the Center for Energy Efficient Materials, Fred Kavli Chair of Nanotechnology and head of the Optoelectronics Research Group, began the UCSB Student Chapter of the Photonics Society in 2012 with Jared Bauters, and remains the faculty advisor for the group.
Society Advisor: Dr. Demis John
Demis was a founding officer of the UCSB IPS in 2012. He received a doctorate from the research group of Dr. Dan Blumenthal in 2012, having studied low-loss glass waveguides, then worked at Praevium Research, Inc making new light sources for medical imaging and spectroscopy until 2017. He currently works at the UCSB NanoFab. He is an advisor for the Photonics Society continuing some of the institutional knowledge, in addition to industry liason by keeping us in contact with local photonics companies. Apart from photonics, his interests include sailing, cycling, science outreach/teaching, and radio DJ'ing at KCSB 91.9FM.
Education Outreach Chair: Kareem Hamdy
Kareem is a graduate student in the research group of Prof. Shuji Nakamura. His research focus is on tunnel junction contacts for high-power high-efficiency InGaN lasers for lighting. He received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University.
Webmaster: Stephen Misak
Stephen Misak received a B.S. in Engineering Physics and with a minor in Optical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2017, and is currently working towards an M.S./PhD. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara. His research focuses on component design for coherent photonic integrated circuits on InP and Silicon Photonics platforms.
